"Mendive is the single most important Cuban painter today." So begins perhaps the best description of Mendive, his history and his work, found in a chapter from Afrocuba: An Anthology: "Strokes of Magical Realism in Manuel Mendive" with contributions from Gerardo Mosquera, Rogelio Martínez Furé, Nancy Morejón, and Pedro Perez-Sarduy.
Mendive graduated from the San Alejandro School of Arts in 1962 with honors in sculpture and painting and has had many exhibits. In 1964 Mendive held his first one-man show at the Centre of Art in Havana. From that time on he exhibited in the most important international art exhibitions and organized many one-man shows in Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Mexico, Algeria, Canada, Russia, Somalia, Congo, Norway, Denmark, Finland, France, England, Spain, Italy, Japon, USA and Angola. He has received numerous prizes in Cuba and in France, among other places. The Cuban booth at the XLIII International Biennal Exhibition of Modern Art in Venice in 1988 was completely dedicated to this works. His work can be seen at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Cuba, as well as at museums in Russia, Somalia, Congo, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Jamaica, and elsewhere.
Mendive has been to Gabon, where he learned a body painting technique that is one of his specialties. He also went to Togo where he painted a Voodoo temple.
