Gabriel Sánchez was born in Cabaiguán, Cuba on August 17, 1979. He studied painting at the Samuel Feijoo School of Art in the province of Villa Clara, graduating in June of 2001. The artist was honored with the Academic Award in 2001 by the Superior Institute of Art and the acclaimed San Alejandro Academy in Havana, Cuba.

Regarding Sánchez's one-person show Landscapes of Poetry and Enchantment (2007), art critic Manuel Alvarez Lezama commented:
In his recent work – compositions marked by distance from the Caribbean and Latin America - Gabriel Sánchez uses a series of effective visual artifices to create luminous scenes of enchanted landscapes (usually numinous forests) that memorialize as much the essence of l9th century Romanticism as a lyric surrealism that is very contemporary, very his, very original.
